Applying AI to Streamline Commercial Insurance Renewals
Applied Systems has launched a groundbreaking submissionless renewal experience for commercial insurance, with Travelers as the first carrier. This innovative capability, powered by AI, aims to simplify the renewal process for agencies.
In the ever-evolving landscape of commercial insurance, the need for efficiency and speed has never been greater. As independent agencies handle approximately 87% of the U.S. commercial property and casualty (P&C) premium, streamlining processes can lead to significant competitive advantages. Recognizing this demand, Applied Systems has launched a groundbreaking submissionless renewal experience that allows carriers to deliver renewal quotes directly within agency management systems. Travelers has come on board as the first anchor carrier, signaling a significant shift in how commercial insurance renewals might be managed.
The newly introduced capability leverages the power of Cytora, an agentic AI risk digitization platform acquired by Applied Systems in September 2025. This innovative technology scans an agency's entire renewal portfolio to identify policies eligible for renewal. When a renewal qualifies, Cytora digitizes the risk data stored in Applied Epic—the industry’s most widely used agency management system—and routes it to the quoting systems of participating carriers. This automated process allows quotes to be returned directly to the agency management system, effectively eliminating the need for agencies to initiate remarketing manually.
Michael Streit, president of Applied Systems Carrier, emphasized the transformative potential of this capability, stating that it reimagines the flow of commercial insurance transactions. The integration of AI into these workflows not only speeds up the quoting process but also significantly reduces the workload for agents, allowing them to focus more on client relationships rather than administrative tasks. Greg Toczydlowski, executive vice president of business insurance at Travelers, echoed this sentiment, highlighting that the capability enhances visibility into an agency's full renewal portfolio and combines it with Travelers' data analytics and product offerings.
One of the key advantages of this submissionless renewal process is its ability to cut quote turnaround times from weeks to mere hours for some carrier partners. Although this claim primarily comes from Applied Systems itself, the implications for efficiency are substantial. In a competitive market where renewal economics are softening, as seen in Travelers' recent Q1 2026 report, having earlier access to agency renewal portfolios can significantly impact a carrier's ability to retain business.
The commercial insurance market is currently experiencing a shift, with Travelers reporting that renewal premium changes in its Business Insurance segment remained positive but were lower than the previous year. Despite this, the company saw a 5% increase in middle-market net written premiums, reaching $3.33 billion. This environment creates a strong incentive for carriers like Travelers to adopt technologies that allow them to be more proactive in their renewal processes.
The launch of this capability also highlights the growing competitive battleground among insurtechs in the renewal automation space. Other platforms, such as Quandri, are also advancing their integrations to various agency management systems, including Vertafore's AMS360 and HawkSoft. As the industry continues to evolve, independent agencies are faced with numerous options to enhance their renewal workflows. The rise of submissionless renewal capabilities represents a significant trend that many agencies may want to consider adopting.
The acquisition of Cytora by Applied Systems is a pivotal part of its strategy to automate what it refers to as the Digital Roundtrip of Insurance. As the first major product outcome from this acquisition, the submissionless renewal experience with Travelers serves as a validation of Cytora's integration capabilities. This collaboration not only enhances the operational efficiency of agencies but also positions both Applied Systems and Travelers as leaders in the push toward AI-driven solutions in commercial insurance.
As agencies seek to optimize their workflows and improve client service, embracing technologies like the submissionless renewal experience may be essential for staying competitive in the modern insurance landscape. With the backing of powerful AI tools, agencies can navigate the complexities of commercial insurance renewals with greater ease, ultimately delivering better outcomes for their clients.
